I have been watching EVs since around 2001. The best site year after year has been the following:

It is simple, maintained, and without advertising. To stay up-to-date, you visit the site around once a month.
Yes, EVs can "go the distance" by adding trailers with generators for the long trips... You can also turn dog houses into solar stations if you lose your dog.
Hydrogen Fuel Cells are going nowhere soon, so don't ask. Even when they do come out they will apparently first come out as electric hybrids... Generation of the Hydrogen fuel will come from (take a guess) the big gas companies. Wonder why the Bush administration loves fuel cells as the alternative fuel when so many other options exist and could get to market quicker?
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) appear to be the quickest path to driving with electricity and driving long distances. Calcars has info on how to convert or you can check the news: http://news.google.com/news?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLJ_en___US205&q=PHEV The current Fowler family plan is to run the "paid off" mini-van into the ground over the next few years and then switch to PHEV. WE will probably switch to a vehicle like the Escort hybrid variety.
Yes, you can convert a diesel to cooking oil from the local restaurants, which generally means free gas, but only if you can stand the time committment / smell.
